Serene Rene’ Calkins, P.T.

I am a Physical Therapist and Owner of Art and Science Physical Therapy in Fort Collins, Colorado. I am also a Certified Brainspotting Therapist, a Brainspotting Consultant, a Pilates Rehabilitation Practitioner, and a CranioSacral Therapist. For 35 years I have specialized in treating patients with chronically involved issues, such as fibromyalgia, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, migraines, failed surgeries and multiple diagnoses. My clinical treatment approach combines Brainspotting, Manual Medicine and Movement Re-Training.

I have been doing massage and bodywork since 1977.

I’ve been a practicing Physical Therapist since 1991 when I graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.  I practiced locally for a few years then opened my own clinic (Arlington Oaks Physical Therapy) in Arlington, Texas, between Dallas and Fort Worth.

After almost seven years, I sold Arlington Oaks Physical Therapy and returned to my native Colorado in 2000.

In 2002, I opened Art and Science Physical Therapy.

Also, in 2002, after watching the field of Pilates develop since the mid-1990s, began my formal training in Pilates Rehabilitation through Polestar Education.

In 2003, I completed my training and became a Polestar Certified Pilates Rehabilitation Practitioner. At that time I was the only one in Northern Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska and Kansas.

In 2010, I expanded my practice by opening our Art and Science Pilates Studio for health and fitness (open to the general public).

In 2014, I created a new program: FULLFITNESS® . This innovative program combines the evaluation skills of a Physical Therapist with the 1:1 attention of our Personal Trainers.

In 2016, I deepened my skills for work with patients experiencing chronic pain and injuries by receiving training in Brainspotting® (Level 1 and Level 2). Since then, I have become a Certified Brainspotting Therapist and a Brainspotting Consultant.

In 2020, I created a 3-day Specialty Brainspotting Training with Mary Jane O’Rourke, LCSW, LMT called “From Freeze to Thaw: Unlocking Trauma in the Body with Brainspotting“. Our second 3-day training “From Freeze to Thaw: The Next Level” is coming out in February 2022.

Currently, I am the Vice President of the Rocky Mountain Brainspotting Institute. I am also Co-Coordinator of the 2021 International Brainspotting Conference, alongside David Grand, PhD.

My book “The Art and Science of Healing: Resolving Chronic Physical and Emotional Pain and Trauma” is expected to be released in 2023.

My training has been eclectic. Courses studied and applied include Spine and Extremity Mobilizations, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, Feldenkrais® and Therapeutic Touch®. The following areas of emphasis, however, are areas from which I draw most frequently:

  • Myofascial, scar and deep soft tissue work (since 1977)
  • CranioSacral Therapy (since 1992)
  • Jones’ Strain/CounterStrain (since 1992)
  • Muscle Energy Techniques (since 1995)
  • Polestar Certified Pilates Rehabilitation Practitioner (since 2003)
  • Brainspotting (since 2016)

Client Testimonials

I had tried many other approaches to get relief from my back and sciatic pain. In desperation I called Serene. She got me in that day! She is so intuitive with her approach. She listens intently and you can almost see her mind digesting the information you give her. She has really helped me.

I also do one-on- one Pilates sessions with Alicia three times a week. She has been a very good teacher. It has been an enjoyable way to get relief from my pain. I cannot say enough about the staff. Matthew is great also. I would highly recommend Art and Science!

Traci

I have nourished a personal myth that if I could attain more foot stability, this would reduce many problems that I have with my knees. This is difficult as I have bunions that roll my feet to the outside and set up a string of related tight muscles on the outside of my legs and make me vulnerable to bouts of immobility with knee pain. Serene noticed my feet and said, “I can help you.” No other P.T. or health professional has ever said that.

She was right; she has helped me. After several months of sessions, I have more stability now. I can execute one-legged yoga poses with more ease and my Tai Chi form is less shaky. My knees have been well behaved as of recent. Serene’s work is a much more humane route than bone-breaking, pin-placing bunion surgery that a podiatrist recommended. I am very pleased – she is the best!!

Connie Winters

I cannot say enough about Serene’s mastery of physical therapy. She saved me from having knee surgery in a few short sessions, and also alleviated chronic rib pain I had suffered for two years.
